Long-term plan

For the Bank of America Chicago Marathon preparation we use classic periodization: we start from building up the base and then build up to the peak and you perform your best on race day.

  • Base: low-intensity volume + strength to build the foundation.
  • Build: threshold speed/endurance and VO2max.
  • Race: maximize your shape for peak performance.
  • Transition: celebrate, enjoy, recover, and stay healthy.
Volume Intensity Strength
Weekly plan

Each week you get a clear schedule: long run, tempo or intervals, easy runs, strength workouts, and rest or cross-training so you can plan ahead and stay consistent. You can shuffle the workouts around to fit your schedule and preferences.

Weekly plan
Daily plan

Every day you see exactly what to do: distance or time, pace and heart rate zones, and any drills or strength work. While long-term and weekly plans are similar for everyone, daily plan is personalized by your pace and heart rate zones.

Daily workout details

Strength is important for runners. It helps protect your body, reduce injury risk, and makes your running feel stronger and more stable.

In this program you’ll do 1–3 strength sessions per week (bodyweight or light equipment). We focus on hips, glutes, core, and mobility—exactly where runners need support.

Every exercise is filmed in our library, so you can always see the correct form. And you don’t guess—your plan includes the exact strength workouts (which exercises, when, and how much).

During the training block you'll do simple tests reguraly so we can set and update your pace zones, heart-rate zones, threshold, and VO2 max — the numbers that actually drive your plan.

We repeat tests as you move through the block. You’ll see the progress: paces that used to feel hard get easier, HR settles where it should, and your threshold and VO2 numbers go up.

Progress tracking — field tests, training zones, and measurable improvements

Your race strategy is clear and practical, so you know what to do on race day at Bank of America Chicago Marathon.

  • Pacing plan (Plan A + Plan B)
We plan your effort for the course, and we also include what to do if conditions change or you feel off.
  • Fueling strategy
You’ll know when to take fluids and energy, based on your pace and race length.
  • How to deal with elevation
You’ll get simple guidance for hills so you can stay controlled and keep your rhythm.
  • Other race details
Warm-up, start tactics, and recovery tips for a smooth day from beginning to finish.
