Split Squat
Split Squat builds single-leg strength in a stable stance without the step in/out of lunges. Holding dumbbells makes the core work harder to stay tall and balanced through each rep.
Instructions
Stand in a split stance with a dumbbell in each hand, arms relaxed by the sides. Keep the torso upright and core engaged. Lower the body by bending both knees until the back knee moves toward the floor. Push through the front foot to return to the starting position with control.
Avoid Common Mistakes
• collapsing the front knee inward
• leaning forward due to the added load
• placing the feet too close together
• bouncing at the bottom
Variations
• with no weights
• with lighter or heavier dumbbells
• with pause at the bottom
• slow controlled lowering
• shorter or longer stance
• alternating sides
